reliving pain

I love basketball, and have been a fan since middle school. I have been a fan of three teams primarily since that time.

The first team that I followed, was the Detroit Pistons, during the "bad boys" era. The main reason was Dennis Rodman (pre-crazy days). He went to school at Southeastern Ok State, and then played as a defensive/rebounding specialist. Which resembled my high school career. Somewhere after high school, the offensive only ball hogging began. They continually struggled to get over the hump to win the championship and finally did, winning two in a row.

My second team was the Seattle Supersonics. They were the high-flying team of Gary Payton and  Shawn Kemp. During my college years they developed into one of the best teams in the NBA, but never won the championship. One year they played in the Finals, losing to the Bulls.

And finally, I have been a follower of the Mavericks through the renaissance of the team with Don Nelson to Avery Johnson. I have been a follower and a believer in the process that we have witnessed. Last year when the mavs lost in the finals after being ahead, crushed me. Literaly I think it caused some mild depression! So this entire year, people have been very excited about the mavs, as they led the league and Dirk looked like the best player in the league. I think that I built a wall, to protect my heart from being broken again. I only attended one game, and did not watch near as many on TV.

So here I am following the biggest upset in NBA History. Want to know the previous biggest upset in NBA history? It was when the #8 Denver Nuggets beat the #1 Seattle Supersonics in the opening round of the playoffs. This was going to be the sonics year, best record, great team, sound familar? The lasting image from that series is the picture below, of Mutombo holding the ball after they won.

I am reliving history, reliving pain. I might be the only basketball fan of both of these teams that had the biggest upsets in history happen to them!

I had thought that the loss of last year would push the mavs to win this year. From my basketball history, I thought they would be like the Pistons, use the pain from loosing the previous year to push them to win. I was believing in a repeat of history, which happened. They repeated the Sonics instead.

I can't believe the Mavericks lost. I just always thought they would eventually come back and win the series and then go on and win the championship. I am shocked. So, how is Kailan doing? I assume that everything is ok. I guess she is at home and everything is going well. I have some news now. Michelle and I found out that we are now pregnant. We are going to be due Dec 27th, which will be good. This way I get my tax break. We are praying for the health of our baby most of all, but we are also praying for a girl this time. I wanted my first two to be boys so that worked out good. We want this one to be a girl though now. Michelle's ecxema?, skin irritation has really flared up since she got pregnant so be praying for her. It is really bothering her and she is not allowed to use any prescription medicine so she is very uncomfortable. Please be praying for her also. I would appreciate it. Thanks. Just out of curiosity, have you sent out the honorariums for the D'now? I know you usually wait a couple of months, but I thought I would check. I will talk to you later. Maybe I will get to see you when you go to camp. What are the dates when you go?

Griff, I think you're in my head! Get out!

I know how you feel..that's the way I was this year too. I'm thankful for being that way this season, though, it's saving me some pain today. After the game and when I woke up this morning, I didn't feel much at all. I guess I am numb to it... I was expecting it almost.

I will still be a Mavs fan. I'm no fair-weather fan! I will come back next year and still believe that they'll make it "this time around". It hurts, but I'll keep believing. One day we'll get that ring!
