Academy Soccer Team

Raigan plays and I coach a Recreational soccer team. Last year Raigan was invited to play with girls from Sherman on an advanced "Academy" team. This was a step up in skill levels for her. We saw her become a much stronger player from joining in this league. This team didn't do so well in this league, but that was ok because they were learning and growing by just playing in it. We scored two goals in eight games, were not ever even close to winning a game.

A couple of weeks ago, we were approached about jumping into the league. The league had lost a team and we could join for a much lower cost. So we got a team together of eight of our normal players, and an additional six players from two other teams. This year was a little different, because I am the coach. So now we have three soccer teams!

We went to the first game and played ok, but positioning we were not used to this level. We play 6v6 in Sherman this was a 9v9 league. The first game was much like last season in the outcome, 6-0. The ball was in front of our goal the whole game. I think we crossed midfield twice the entire game.

But this week was a little different. We moved some players around, made a transition in formation. We went from a 3-3-2 to a 4-3-1, adding another defensive player to help stop the scoring and hopefully move the ball out of the one half of the field.

It was 1-0 at half, and we were down. The game was much better played by our team. The changed had helped stop scoring, but we had not put together much of an attack. In the second half however, we scored. It was tied 2-2, with about 4 minutes remaining. Raigan was playing as the middle attacker, she broke free, dribbled the length of the field and made a shot just as a girl pressured her from the side. The ball looked weak enough for the goalie to pick up, but it went through her hands, but it hit the goalpost. But luckily, it spun into the goal! We won the game 3-2. But more important than winning, the team played great. It would have been a victory even if we had been behind in the end.
